Album review – Anne Marie Almedal: Memory Lane

The Art of the Torch singer! Such wonderful words about “Memory Lane”🙂

The Art of the Torch Singer

Winter Song: raises the hairs on the back of your neck (in a good way)

There are many gorgeous moments in Anne Marie Almedal’s album Memory Lane – the distillation of a host of folk and pop influences into a clean, uncluttered sound that draws equally on the inspiration of the landscape around her home in Kristiansand, which permeates the music and conjures a brooding, unsettled and occasionally restless atmosphere.

Threads of nostalgia are tempered by elemental noises and echoes that give the album an almost metaphysical feel.  The opening track, “Back to Where it Started”, with its soaring hints of Pentangle flute and guitar, is a tale for everyone looking in the rear view mirror, trying to recapture the mysterious moment when a relationship sprang into bloom.

With her British husband and co-writer Nicholas Sillitoe, the Norwegian singer/songwriter has crafted a fresh, contemporary, ambient take on modern folk…

“Gold and silver…”

En liten time ved pianoet… Jackson C Frank’s “Milk and Honey”, gull med hes morgenstemme pĂĄ et litt ustemt yamaha, hjemme i stuen…en lysnende høstmorgen. “Gold and silver is the autumn
, soft and tender are her skies
. Yes and no are the answers
, written in my true love’s eyes…”

Det er tid til en til… henter ned tekst og akkorder pĂĄ “Catch the wind” av Donovan. Enda mer gull, og dagen kan starte. “In the chilly hours and minutes of uncertainty, I want to be, in the warm hold of your lovin’ mind…”

Nærmer seg plateslipp, sanger surrer rundt i tankene, dag og natt. Gleder meg masse! xAMA.

A rare moment of quiet. Me-time, by the piano. Practicing Jackson C. Frank’s “Milk and Honey”. It’s a beautiful autumn morning here in Kristiansand. The best time of year. “Gold and silver is the autumn
, soft and tender are her skies
. Yes and no are the answers
, written in my true love’s eyes…”

And there’s just enough time to run through another song, more gold dust from Donovan, with his classic “Catch the wind” wake-up call. “In the chilly hours and minutes of uncertainty, I want to be, in the warm hold of your lovin’ mind…”

It’s that all-too-familiar “soon-to-release-a-new-album” time. Songs are playing endlessly in my thoughts, day and night. Time to rehearse my own songs, focus, and hope for the best…

Love, as always. xAMA.
